Illegal filename characters

The Internet's properly Unicode-transparent these days, there's domain names in Chinese and Thai and Cryllic character sets now. Keying "ý" on a Microsoft operating system keyboard was Alt-236 last time I tried. With Unicode as opposed to ASCII it takes more keystrokes than that but the entry system is the same.

The days of uniquely English character sets has long gone, but there's one big caveat and it's existed since CodePage 437 raised its ugly head in CONFIG.SYS files. Copying between file systems is a blight where illegal filename characters are involved and the problem hasn't eased as time's passed. Failed drag-and-drops, failed command line copies, it's a vile timewaster.

Contributions here on how each of us copes would be interesting.

If you view the page with Character Encoding Unicode UTF-8 then it will correctly. Some users have auto-detect turned off and their character set selected as, for example, Latin or Codepage 800 in which case the name's displayed only approximately. If your work machine is in fact browsing on auto-detect then the Forumgarden server is badly configured but it wasn't when I last checked. Have a look and tell me what you find.
