ministers suggest spare bedroom housing benefit reforms the AA grumpy column

Post by the grumps »

good evening from a wet and windy grumpy towers

( have you had baked beans for tea again grumps ED)

now i know most politicians live in teletubby land but this has got to be be the most daftest and most outragous idea yet.

HOUSING benefit claimants will soon have to pay extra rent if they live in properties with more bedrooms than they need.

The crackdown means a couple in a four-bed house will only get the cash for a two-bed and will have to make up the difference.

Ministers think a third of the two million working-age housing benefit claimants live in homes with more bedrooms than they need. The annual surplus paid to them is estimated at £500million.

The imbalance means there could be a million "spare" bedrooms in council and housing association homes across the UK.

At the same time FIVE MILLION people sit on social housing waiting lists and 250,000 tenants struggle on in overcrowded homes.

Welfare reform minister Lord Freud said: "It's not fair or affordable for people to continue to live in homes too large for their needs.

"It's only right that we bring fairness back to the system and make better use of the social housing stock.

"From April 2013 we will expect tenants to make a contribution towards the rent if they live in accommodation larger than they need, just as housing benefit claimants in the private sector do now."

He stressed the changes will NOT apply to pensioners, only people of working age.

Ministers say if no action is taken the annual £21billion housing benefit bill could hit £25BILLION over the next four years.

A blitz on tenants illegally renting out their council houses is already under way.

Ministers say up to 200,000 people are involved in the scam which costs taxpayers £5billion a year.

AAG

this has got to be the balmiest idea yet

so doest this mean that parents who have raised children and then watched them fly the nest to get married or go to college /uni are to be punished for having their childs room spare ? what if their child wishes to come home does this mean he cannot because mum and dad are not allowed to keep a spare room unless they pay for it bearing in mind not everyone lives on the benefits culture the mother and father may be incapacitated or unable to find work.

this smacks of nanny labour type big brother what right has lord fraud living in his luxury home to tell us what we can and cannot have in our own homes.

yet illegal immigrants come here pay nothing into the system and jump the housing queue as a priority how many of these so called enrichers are living in our homes and will this two tier rule apply to them or just the british families.

whats next white british families being thrown out of their own homes to house illegal immigrants or do we just let the spare bedroom to them?

come along lord la la time for tubby bye byes

It is not a barmy Idea and you are completely missing the point of this change.

We are talking about people who claim benefit and are tenants not people who own their own home.

In a situation where say a single man or woman rents a three bedroom property and two bedrooms are going to waste, YOU, the tax payer Is paying the rent on that three bedroomed property In the way of benefit and, housing benefit and council tax.

With the changes, the tenant would have to find a smaller property or pay for the extra two bedrooms himself. Why should us tax payers keep one person on benefit, not working In a three bedroom house? If they want the extra space, then let THEM pay for It not Britian's tax payers.

There has been too much flagrant abuses of the housing and benefit system where single people have rented three or four bedroomed properties and the state has had to pick the bill up.... This will stop the abuse and save the welfare system millions.

Come on admit It... If you heard that an unemployed Immigrant was living alone In a four bedroomed house at the state's expense, you'd be up In arms. This will stop the exploitation of the welfare state and for that, you should be thrilled.

Here's a more sensible approach to the changes:

quote Ministers hope the squeeze will encourage thousands to downsize, freeing up larger properties for those who need them.

i am aware this is aimed at housing benefit claimants

but this still smacks of the government interfering in our private lives and is socialism gone too far.

and who gets the houses our so called enrichers with ready made families

would you see british white families forced to downgrade to allow a immigrant family to take their home? because that is their aim house the illegals on the cheap.

and i thought you where pro BNP ?????

You are completely missing the point here...

This applies to council housing and housing association properties where the tenant Is on benefit.

When you say... " would you see british white families forced to downgrade to allow a immigrant family to take their home?"........... Your not seeing the wider picture are you?

If It's a British white FAMILY as you say, then they would not have to downsize from a FAMILY sized home.

The changes are there to stop the system paying out millions In housing benefit and council tax on three bedroomed houses with one person living In It. It has nothing to do with Immigrants..... One person taking up a family sized council home of three bedrooms Is stopping a British white family from having a home.
