Or the quest for the good life.

Could you go off the grid to some extent, have a small holding.

Could you do without your phones and computer?

A knife, a 10' length of braided nylon rope and a slingshot. Thats all I need.

And a chair.

Armani cologne, I need that.

Someone that knows about killing bears, I should probably have someone like that around but thats it.

I need a firm mattress or my back will be out all day.

Plus some high thread count Egyptian cotton sheets and a decent pillow, I dont think thats asking too much.

Why do I have to give up my computer? Absolutely not, I wont do it.

A coffee pot pft...cigs. I do like bacon but I dont want to kill a pig every time I eat breakfast, screw that. Ill need a place that has bacon ready when I need it.

Leave me alone.

In my bad old days I was off the grid about as much as I was on it. It's amazing how much food there is just growing wild. What really turned me on was going for months knowing that not another living soul knew where I was nor ever saw me.

I was lots leaner in those days and ate lots of greens, berrys and fish and small game. :)

Yep. The pub or a similar facility would be vital, though.

I know it to be romantic to do away with those things

But sure, give me a soccer ball, basketball, or my total gym any day and a good astronomy book next to a lantern or some Moonshine among eloquent conversation and I'll marry you

...

OMG! did I just say that!?!?!?!?!

What if we found ourselves in the postion that we had to live "off the grid"?

Suddenly there was no electricity, no plumbing, our home destroyed...much like the folks have to survive after a vicious hurricane or tornado. I think in this case, it is not a matter of self-suffiency, but a matter of folks working together to survive. JMO

You would be better off away from those who want to "work together". When people band together for any reason, someone always wants to be the boss. To rule and control.:(

I presume, then, that you'd prefer the Kibutz system where all decisions are taken by the group as a whole as a democratic vote?

I'd prefer going it alone, where all decisions are made by me, for me.

Generally not a viable long term survival strategy.

Depends. When your merry little band disintegrates from petty feuds and mini wars, I'll be watching from a distance.
