Put Kayla down at 16.5 years

Post by nvalleyvee »

For Kayla - my lover dog

I put her down last Saturday. She was fine until 2 weeks before. The vet said it was the beginning of the end. She just got really sick very fast and I couldn't watch it anymore.

You're giving me a special gift,

So sorrowfully endowed,

And through these last few cherished days,

Your courage makes me proud.

But really, love is knowing

When your best friend is in pain,

And understanding earthly acts

Will only be in vain.

So looking deep into your eyes,

Beyond, into your soul,

I see in you the magic, that will

Once more make me whole.

The strength that you possess,

Is why I look to you today,

To do this thing that must be done,

For it's the only way.

That strength is why I've followed you,

And chose you as my friend,

And why I've loved you all these years...

My partner 'til the end.

Please, understand just what this gift,

You're giving, means to me,

It gives me back the strength I've lost,

And all my dignity.

You take a stand on my behalf,

For that is what friends do.

And know that what you do is right,

For I believe it too.

So one last time, I breathe your scent,

And through your hand I feel,

The courage that's within you,

To now grant me this appeal.

Cut the leash that holds me here,

Dear friend, and let me run,

Once more a strong and steady dog,

My pain and struggle done.

And don't despair my passing,

For I won't be far away,

Forever here, within your heart,

And memory I'll stay.

I'll be there watching over you,

Your ever faithful friend,

And in your memories I'll run,

...a young dog once again

I remember you asking us what you should do.

You did the right and humane thing, as she had a long and happy life.

But I do know just how much it hurts and I am so sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry for you. People who don't have dogs can not understand that 16 years with any animal means they are one of the family. I will be in a similar situation not too far off in the future as two of mine are now 13 and 14 years old although in good health now. It may seem heartless to some but my way of coping is to get another dog. If I take another from a rescue home, I feel I'm not replacing the dog I've lost but helping another.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them. R.L. Binyon

Well said Odie and what a beautiful poem from Sunshine. :-6

I am so sorry for your loss nvv but it is dreadful to see our loved ones in pain.

Doing what is best for Kayla doesn't make it hurt any less for you.

I'm sending you hugs and my tears join yours to mark your loss.

Love and hugs to you nvv, many of us know exactly how you feel and share it with you. :yh_hugs:yh_hugs:yh_hugs:yh_flower
