I did. Let's see how it works....

Possible solution to the mystery...from the "FAQ" section titled "How do I rate a thread?":

Once enough votes have been cast for the thread rating, you may see a set of stars appear with the title of the thread in the thread listings. These stars reflect the average vote cast, and can allow you to quickly see which threads are worth reading if you are on a very busy forum with a lot of threads.

Is it possible that the three of us rating it simply hasn't reached the threshold number of votes needed to display an average?

It looks as though (if P. did give it a "5") that it divides the number of points

by the number of people who rated the thread.

I notice that I can't change my rating, so if a good thread goes bad, or vice

versa, tough.

When viewing the thread, where I before pressed "rating" there are now 4 stars.

Seems to be working, so far, if the guess about Mz. P. is right - 12/4=3.
