Texas EquuSearch Aids Authorities In Amber Alert Search

Investigators: Nothing Indicates Girl, 12, Planned To Run Away, Foul Play

POSTED: 10:30 pm CST December 4, 2005

UPDATED: 4:29 pm CST December 5, 2005

ORCHARD, Texas -- A search-and-rescue group began looking for a 12-year-old missing Fort Bend County girl who has been missing for more than two days, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.

The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office issued an Amber Alert at 8:13 p.m. Sunday for Teketria Buggs. Her family reported her missing shortly after 10 a.m. Saturday.

More than 50 authorities and Texas EquuSearch volunteers began looking for Teketria at 9 p.m. Sunday.

EquuSearch founder Tim Miller said volunteers would use remote control airplanes, high-vision scopes, 4-wheelers and Sonar to search more than 12 acres of heavily wooded land and the Brazos River near the girl's home, located in the 900 block of Johnson Road in Orchard.

"There's something that just doesn't feel right about this. We are going to give it our best shot and see if we can get her located," Miller said.

Teketria, also known as Teeky-Bug, was last seen Friday asleep on a couch inside her family’s home in the 9000 block of Johnson Road in Orchard. The girl’s relatives told authorities it was common for her to sleep on the couch and in her daily clothing.

Teketria's step-uncle, Janice Parker, told KPRC Local 2 that Teketria would no have left home on her own and said the family cannot understand why someone would take her.

"This is not the city. This is the country and most of the time you don't even have to lock your door out here," Parker said.

Investigators do not believe Teketria planned on running away, or that her disappearance is a case of foul play. None of her belongings was missing from the home.

"We are not ruling out foul play, but (investigators) are taking into consideration that Teketria Bugg is a very young 12-year-old," Fort Bend County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Terriann Carlson said.

Fort Bend County authorities said they came across a burn pile early Monday afternoon. No other information has been released about that discovery.

Teketria is a black female, about 4 feet 10 inches tall and weighs about 95 pounds. She has black hair, brown eyes, and light brown skin. She was last seen wearing a red and white long-sleeved pullover shirt, blue jeans and white tennis shoes.

Authorities said Teketria appears immature for her age but is an A-B student at school.

The girl's disappearance remains under investigation.

Anyone with information should call the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office at (281) 341-4665 or Crime Stoppers at (281) 342-TIPS.! ......................................

RICHMOND - The stepfather of a 12-year-old girl missing since Friday night from her rural Fort Bend County home has been questioned in connection with her disappearance and arrested on an unrelated charge.

Steven J. Carrington, 31, was arrested by sheriff's deputies on an outstanding warrant related to a domestic violence charge filed against him in April.

Chief Deputy Craig Brady said detectives have talked to Carrington about his missing stepdaughter, Teketria Buggs, but have no evidence to seek charges against him in connection with her disappearance.

The 12-year-old was reported missing Saturday morning by family members, who told deputies they thought she might have run away.

Brady said an Amber Alert was issued Sunday when further information was gathered indicating the case might not be a runaway.

Volunteers, neighbors, relatives and police have conducted a massive search of the area around the small town of Orchard but no trace of her has been found.

Divers also searched the nearby Brazos River but found no clues, Brady said. Brady said FBI behavioral specialists joined the investigation as well as the Texas Rangers.

Teketria was last seen Friday night sleeping in her home in the 9900 block of Johnson.

Brady said the family told deputies the girl had been upset because she was not allowed to go to a funeral in Houston, and the relatives thought she might have run away.

Carrington was taken into custody Monday on a charge of failure to appear in court in connection with a Class A misdemeanor family assault case. According to court records, Carrington was charged with striking a woman on April 30.

Brady said the family told deputies the girl had been upset because she was not allowed to go to a funeral in Houston, and the relatives thought she might have run away.

She was already upset due to not being allowed to go to a funeral. Why wouldn't they let her go to a funeral? Maybe she was already hurt or missing at that time.

Carrington was taken into custody Monday on a charge of failure to appear in court in connection with a Class A misdemeanor family assault case. According to court records, Carrington was charged with striking a woman on April 30.

He's known for abuse already. Maybe he MADE it to where she was unable to attend the funeral, if there actually was one, and if there wasn't a funeral that was a cover story. What if they just used a funeral of somebody in that city as an excuse for her to be upset?

dont know where your husband was when he left the house between 10 and 2am

What kind of wife is she? I ALWAYS know where my husband is and vise versa. It's called a safety precaution in case something happens we know which direction to go! She may even be part of it. Did they have a life insurance policy on the girl? When times get really hard some people do stupid and down right low stuff to get money.

body found in brazos river, obvious signs of trauma is what is reported. the stepfather is in jail on unrelated domestic abuse charges.

I'm wondering if he actually did this to that poor girl and the mother helped. It's already known she couldn't look into the camera and she don't have a clue about anything related to her husband 10 to 2 am. I feel sorry for that poor girl, what did she do to deserve death? Not a dang thing! I hope they find her killer and let him/them have it hard without the lube!!!

I just reread this and saw this:

Divers also searched the nearby Brazos River but found no clues

Does that mean her body was put there after they searched it or they searched the wrong part of the river? Regardless someone knew they'd search it and waited till it was searched. If the stepdad was part of it, he had help.

the river is large and murky. finding a body is not that easy. texas equusearch had a very specialized water/cadaver dog they brought in, who found her.

Maybe we should also ask: What kind of husband is he?
