Moby Dick, for the 10th time probably. I went to the bookstore on my lunch break Friday and picked up the book; I went with an anniversary edition. I go to check out and this girl with a wonderful face, looked at the book and said, "or The Whale". I said, yep, wonderful book. She said she had never made it past the first page, but then quoted five or six lines from the first paragraph. I told her it was in my opinion the absolute best introductory paragraph in literary history. Then told her I would read it to her sometime, winked and left.
I know you didn't ask for all of that, but I'm bored and avoiding a story I want to tell.

I'm re-reading (for the fourth time) a book by Cormac McCarthy written in 1985...titled "Blood Meridian" which is based on real people who were professional bounty hunters, soldiers of fortune, and scalphunters in the American Southwest during 1849-1850...Mexico, Texas, Arizona, and California. It is by far his best work of fiction to date, but not for the faint of heart or the overly sensitive...full of violence, but beautifully written in near biblical language. The Glanton gang is led by John Joel Glanton and Judge Holden. They set out to kill Apache Indians who are raiding settlements on both sides of the border, and.....well, read it and see. It flies in the face of all the BS you've heard and seen about how the west was won by bold adventure seeking white hat wearing John Wayne hero types.

The Jennifer Morgue, Charles Stross. I'm going to read every one of his now. Think James Bond and John Constantine steeped in a pot of Cthulhu mythos with a dash of B.P.R.D.
Great read!

I'm reading a novel called Swim to Me about the Weeki Wachee (Florida) "mermaids" who perform shows underwater in the hot springs.
And last night I started the big, new Einstein, a biography of Albert. The cover has a beautiful colored photo of him (can't tell if it's real or colorized) but it certainly brings his warmth to light, always seeing black and white photos of him.
I also have in line, The Grave Digger's Daughter by Joyce Carol Oates. I'd never read any Oates and thought that might be a good one to start with. Has anyone else read it? Was it any good?

Hi Red,
I will definitely read the "Mermaids" I'm sure that it may mention....Ester Williams:wah::wah: I hope....I was nicknamed after her.
Not sure about Joyce Carol Oates....I worked for Bill Bradley at one time, and we had a fund raiser. JCO was invited as a guest speaker and put everyone to sleep.
Think that she was too intelligent but dry and didn't know how to capture an audience. Let me know what you think of her writing:-6

Im reading about ancient Persia and the struggle modern Iran has with trying to keep historical languages like Farsi and traditional religious teachings like Zoroastrianism alive while there are so many other influences that have permeated the Iranian society.
Many feel shame that their country isnt the super power that it once was but wish to regain that stature.
Thats a major part of the standoff between the US and its nuclear facility demands. They see it as a stance they cant afford to lose.
Meanwhile conservative Islamists have no interest in a Persian identity.
Iran is rich in history and culture but its become fragmented and they dont seem to have a clear view as to how to unite themselves.
The one thing they do agree on is they dont wish to be infiltrated by western ideaology or anything it represents.
Theyre also trying to shake Arab influences and self admittedly the whole process is schizophrenic.
They want solidarity but their identity crisis is embedded in centuries of invasions that left their mark.
