Nothing new about irresponsible handling of guns by police officers. Training means zilch if you don't stay awake and practice what you learned. Just about everybody with a driver’s license has had training and testing, but accidents happen.
I understand a responsible driver may have an accident as while driving situation changes constantly. Unexpected things happen.
There is just about never a real accidental discharge of a firearm. Seems inevitably they turn out to be a NEGLIGENT DISCHARGE.

Police are featured way to often.

We don’t know if Mrs. Rutledge had a Standard or Enhanced Permit, but she most certainly did have firearms training. And a criminal background check. Not that it did her any good –

The lack of training is appalling.
Even most police officers are only required to hit a target in a firing range 80% of the time.
Being armed is a lot more than hitting a target in a controlled environment.
I think the NRA failed in its true purpose. They should be spearheading the drive for proper training and responsibility of gun ownership, rather than feeding the "Oh-my-God-the-gummint-is-gonna-take-your-guns-away" hysteria.

In an advanced civilisation, why would anybody feel the need to carry personal protection,especially when the trained upholders of the law fail to use their own weapons safely ?

In the same way, firing in the field is nothing like firing on the range. On the range you get time to carefully gather your thoughts & calmly take aim. On the field you have to make a split second decision whilst your adrenalin is running, knowing that as the symbol of authority you are likely to be the #1 target.

I specially put 'civilised' into that sentence for a reason, personal protection these days means carrying condoms in most civilised countries.
