Harriet Beecher Stowe's book "Uncle Tom's Cabin"? This book was written in 1852 and became the SECOND most widely read book of the 19th Century. It had a huge impact on the attitude towards slavery, more so I believe, than John Brown.
The book is available to read free online.

Well, many historians claim this to be true and I tend to agree because it was written 10 years before the Civil War, giving the anti slavery agenda time to develop.

My father gave me a lovely bound copy of this book when I was a child. I have read it several times.
