Wow, that's amazing KE!

Yesterday afternoon, we looked at the sky here and saw "two" beautiful rainbows!!! I've seen rainbows before, but never "two" at the same time! It was a lower one under an upper one! Just now when writing this, it occured to me, silly me, why didn't I take a picture!!? :p

Tonight you'll see the biggest full moon since last December.....

Check it out....

NASA - Biggest Full Moon of the Year: Take 2

Above: The perigee full of Dec. 2008. "A cold wind was blowing as the Moon set over a neighbor's farm," says photographer Eric Ingmundson of Sparta, Wisconsin. "Next time (Jan. 10th) I plan to use a tripod."

"It's a cold winter here in the Netherlands," says photographer Peter Paul Hattinga Verschure. "Last night the temperature was 8 degrees below zero and the air was filled with ice crystals. Colorful pillars of light rose up from all the bulbs in the city, crowned by a bright halo around the Moon high in the sky."

APPROACHING COMET: Comet Lulin (C/2007 N3), discovered in 2007 by a Strait-bridging team of astronomers from Taiwan and China, is swinging around the sun and approaching Earth. Amateur astronomer Gregg Ruppel sends this photo taken Jan. 8th from Ellisville, Missouri:

"I caught Comet Lulin in morning twilight as it was passing 6th magnitude star 47 Librae," says Ruppel. "The image is a 24 minute exposure through my 10-inch telescope."

Comet Lulin is gliding through the constellation Libra in the southeastern sky before dawn: sky map. It glows like an 8th magnitude star, so a mid-sized backyard telescope is required to see it. Visibility will improve in February as the Earth-comet distance shrinks. At closest approach (0.41 AU) on February 24th, the comet should brighten to about 5th magnitude--dimly visible to the unaided eye and an easy target for binoculars: ephemeris.

Surprises are possible. The hyperbolic orbit of Comet Lulin suggests this could be the comet's first visit to the inner solar system. How it will react to increasing sunlight is anyone's guess. Stay tuned for updates in the weeks ahead.

DIRECT FROM TAIWAN: Chinese astronomer Quanzhi Ye co-discovered the comet and he is continuing to monitor it. "This photo taken on Jan. 5th comes from the same telescope at the Lulin Observatory in Taiwan we used to find the comet in 2007," says Ye. "I was only 19 years old at the time of the discovery. I hope that my experience might inspire other young people to pursue the same starry dreams as myself."

more images: from Jeremy Perez of Sunset Crater National Monument, Arizona; from Ernesto Guido et al. of Italy; from Bill Gucfa of Rehoboth, Massachusetts; from Karzaman Ahmad of the Langkawi National Observatory in Malaysia:

while in Hawaii I had the amazing sight of 2 Rainbows - beautiful color.

unigue with 2.

Kathy

there's a planet / bright something?? would that still be Saturn?

the moon is huge - I made that comment to my husband, he's asked me several times if that's Saturn - ever since you started this thread, we've watched the 2 planets drift further away from the moon.

very cool

Patsy,

That's Mercury, Jupiter and Mars in order from the right of the moon on February 26, 2009

Taken from Southern Sky News:

http://www.psychohistorian.org/index.ph ... &Itemid=28

"In the last week of February, in the early-morning sky, Jupiter, Mars and Mercury are visible, shining again after their long holiday beyond the Sun. The three bright planets lie below the curved pattern of stars that make up the Scorpion. From day to day, their changing positions will be noticeable.

On Sunday, February 22, Jupiter (the brightest of the three) lies halfway between Mercury (above) and Mars (below, the faintest). The beautiful thin sickle Moon is then a short distance above the threesome.

The next morning, the Moon is even closer to the three planets during their early-morning get-together. I’ll be keeping my camera close at hand.

On Thursday, February 26, Mercury lies midway between Jupiter and Mars. Remember that Mars can be recognized by its orange-red colour.

Saturday, February 28, three days after New Moon, look for the sickle in the west. A short distance below you’ll notice the bright planet Venus. Viewed through a telescope, you’ll be in for a surprise: the phase of Venus will match the Moon’s phase!"

Unfortunately, we can't see the moon in Noo Joisey or PA tonight due to the rain and clouds.

But, the moon should look beautiful tonight. Please let me know if it is....

Here's some info about the moon tonight....

WORM MOON: Tonight's full Moon has a special name--the Worm Moon. It signals the coming of northern spring, a thawing of the soil, and the first stirrings of earthworms in long-dormant gardens. Step outside tonight and behold the wakening landscape. "Worm moonlight" is prettier than it sounds.

Just came home tonight about 10:45 and decided to sit on my porch to look at the sky. Of course I was looking for comets, meteorites, ISS or aliens:wah:

When I looked up in the sky I saw the ISS heading northeast. It looked like it was travelling with another ship, but it wasn't:-6 It was the space shuttle by itself. I could see it so clearly...what a beauty.

WOW, I feel so lucky :-6being in the right place at the right time:p:D

I'm in February. Not a nice moon for the native americans. :(

• Full Snow Moon - February Since the heaviest snow usually falls during this month, native tribes of the north and east most often called February's full Moon the Full Snow Moon. Some tribes also referred to this Moon as the Full Hunger Moon, since harsh weather conditions in their areas made hunting very difficult.

Oh tonight is going to be a lovley night to look at the moon....You'll see the beautiful pleiades:-6 Did you know that these 7 sisters were the daughters of Atlas;)?

*****Classical Mythology. seven daughters of Atlas and half sisters of the Hyades, placed among the stars to save them from the pursuit of Orion. One of them (the Lost Pleiad) hides, either from grief or shame.

SUNSET CONJUNCTION: When the sun goes down on Sunday, April 26th, step outside and look west. An exquisitely-slender crescent Moon is lining up with Mercury and the Pleiades star cluster for a three-way conjunction in the sunset sky. Click here for the full story and a sky map:

I have only been in the East for 9 years, going on 10 soon. Fireflies, thunderstorms and blizzards are still our main attraction of interest, we will never get used to them.

Or the critters in the backyard, the woodchuck came back this afternoon. :)

I grew up with all three Chonsi and they still amaze me. As a child, I also caught fireflies in a jar and had holes punched in the lid so they wouldn't die. Left the jar on my nightstand and watched them twinkle until I fell asleep. I would let them go in the morning though so they could find their friends.

I sat in my yard looking at the sky tonight and only saw a few planes and helicopters....That's so unusual for this time as there are so many planes flying by.

I was thrilled to see a meteorite and some sort of a satellite flying by...don't know what it was. It looked like a butterfly flitting by at warp speed:wah:

That's what makes me happy;)
