So, why is it so flat...I mean, if this was taken from space, shouldn't there be some curves?

It looks flat because all you are seeing is light against a black background. If it was a daylight picture you would see the curvature of the earth.

Light pollution. Those lights should be hooded and directed down in the area that needs light.

The above image is actually a composite of hundreds of pictures made by the orbiting DMSP satellites. <---quoted from the text under that picture.

Looks as if it was a bunch of different pictures added together :)

That's a neat graphic though :)

The night one is especially interesting....look at the Congo and the great desert of Australia! And all that light from little Hawaii, and a few spots in Alaska! Amazing.
