Yes, it has just been determined that Pluto has been stripped of its status as a planet. How humiliating for Pluto.:o Link here.

I'm wearing black today...in support of poor Pluto....diminished in title, perhaps, but never in our hearts!

Pluto was always a punk. He should have never been named a planet. There are ice balls floating around out there bigger than him. :yh_beatup

Wouldn't you know it, just when I finally learned the right order of the planets, they now turned it into a math problem! :wah: (9 - 1 = 8 )

I was hoping that Xena would join the system instead:(

Or that those astronomers would be working on making the "Jump" possible soon so we could start trolling for inhabitable planets. You know, the one thing that makes me sad about Asimov is that he describes a future which seems entirely plausible, but which none of us will be able to witness. And that's when I get depressed about the limitations of our bodies, because I'd do anything to vacation on one of the Alpha Centauri planets, for example (although I'm not sure if binaries are able to have a planetary system).

I have to say I agree with Pluto's demotion. it never made sense to me to call it a planet.

The irony is, assuming I'm remembering my Roman mythology correctly here, that the other gods didn't want much to do with their Pluto either.

I was in 6th grade (I think) when they discoverd Pluto. At first it was just called "Planet X" and it had a real mystery around it! Everyone at school was really excited because the information on it was so sketchy. Could it have life? Alien civilizations? I even ordered a book on it's discovery through the Weekly Reader teacher in our school.

I kind of feel sad now that it's just a "sub-planet".

On the other hand, scientists have discovered over 200 other planets around other stars since then, so there's plenty to get excited about. I guess you just have to go with the flow, eh?

Jives, you know very well that Pluto was located in 1930 (it was predicted by calculation prior to that, according to my 1995 Hutchinson concise encyclopaedia).
