Plot Summary for

Whale Rider (2002) More at IMDbPro »

"On the east coast of New Zealand, the Whangara people believe their presence there dates back a thousand years or more to a single ancestor, Paikea, who escaped death when his canoe capsized by riding to shore on the back of a whale. From then on, Whangara chiefs, always the first-born, always male, have been considered Paikea's direct descendants. Pai, an 11-year-old girl in a patriarchal New Zealand tribe, believes she is destined to be the new chief. But her grandfather Koro is bound by tradition to pick a male leader. Pai loves Koro more than anyone in the world, but she must fight him and a thousand years of tradition to fulfill her destiny."

Another outstanding New Zealand film that you might enjoy is "Once Were Warriors"

It is not at all like "Whale Rider", but depicts one aspect of life that some Maori live.

Once Were Warriors (1994)

Thank you so much for recommending "Once Were Warriors" Lon. I finally had a chance to see it last night.

It was a brilliant movie, and I was in bits and pieces after watching it.

This movie is a story that takes place in New Zealand. It's a story about a woman who is married to a violent man. Her marriage is in shambles and she fights tooth and nail to keep her family together.

Know beforehand though that this movie is a very disturbing and violent movie about domestic violence. I don't normally watch movies like this due to the violence. BUT...This is one movie that shouldn't be missed. It was so well-written and acted.
