What's the first line?

Post by weinbeck »

Many years ago I heard actor Edward Woodward (Callan, The Equaliser, etc.) singing How Great Thou Art on Stars on Sunday with tremendous conviction. He had a really powerful voice. The trouble is, in common with almost every hymn book in the country, hymns are indexed per first line, so Jerusalem! would be under A for And did those feet in ancient times....

Unfortunately, try as I might, I can't remember the opening line. I tried reading through the hymns but gave up after about four hundred! Anybody out there know the opening words. Thank you in anticipation.

HOW GREAT THOU ART

O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder,

Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made;

I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,

Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,

How great Thou art, How great Thou art.

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,

How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

When through the woods, and forest glades I wander,

And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees.

When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur

And see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze.

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,

How great Thou art, How great Thou art.

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,

How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

And when I think, that God, His Son not sparing;

Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;

That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing,

He bled and died to take away my sin.

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,

How great Thou art, How great Thou art.

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,

How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation,

And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart.

Then I shall bow, in humble adoration,

And then proclaim: "My God, how great Thou art!"

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,

How great Thou art, How great Thou art.

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,

How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

Magenta:-6

Since Aussies are standing upside down if you open your mouth to sing it, it might just fall out. LOL

BRILLIANT!! I knew somebody would know, but for it to come up so quickly with all the corresponding words, leaves me speechless! The words are quite, quite powerful, especially the third and fourth verses, almost as powerful as the words to that other hymn Amazing Grace, which I have great difficulty singing that in church sometimes, because the first verse could have been written specifically for me. Once again, to both you and others, many. many thanks.

I'm going to run it off on my printer right now.
