Ok I did not take this picture, this was emailed to me from a friend and how he got it who knows...

This is the northern lights over Yellowknife North West Territories. Way norther of me here in Canada.

I would like to think this is a most AMAZING picture... I am a photo nut myself, but I feel sad when I think... is this real or photo shopped. Regardless I thought it was gorgeous....

I'd say that one isn't photo-shopped, minx. The northern lights are predominately that green. Awesome picture. :)

Back in August 1990 or '91, we were walking my girlfriend's dog in the wee hours, and the entire sky was pulsating in that shade of green. I live on the northeast shore of Lake Ontario (latitude : 44 degrees N), which isn't that far north. We do get a spectacular display every few years, but that August night was surreal.

Scientists claim they are silent, but many people (myself included) claim they make a slight whooshy, high pitched whistling noise. The First Nations people say it is the voices of the ancestors.

The Aurora is most visible at latitudes higher than 65 degrees north. In Scotland, this would be the most northerly points on the mainland, as well as in Orkney and Shetland. There have, however, been many smaller 'light showers' in various areas around Scotland, including some southerly parts of the country. These generally occur in the intervening years between its 11-year cycle, and are most frequent in the autumn, winter and spring.

It is best seen on a crisp, clear evening, when the nights are longer and darker. Country areas are best since if you are in urban areas, you will have to contend with the glow of the streetlights, which can diminish the spectacle. The Aurora can occur in the summer as well.

As the Aurora Borealis are now at the end of their current 11-year cycle, the next best time to view the 'Northern Lights' will be during 2012/2013.

Anyone wishing to see them around this time had better start sucking up to me or Randall, mwhahaha :sneaky:

Local song lyrics, will try to find a you tube so you can hear it ;)

# When I was a lad, a tiny wee lad

My mother said to me

Come see the Northern Lights my boy

They' re bright as they can be

She called them the heavenly dancers

Merry dancers in the sky

I'll never forget, that wonderful sight

They made the heav ens bright

The Northern Lights of old Aberdeen

Mean home sweet home to me

The Northern Lights of old Aberdeen

Are what I long to see

I’ve been a wanderer all of my life

Any many a sight I've seen

God speed the day when l' m on my way

To my home in Aberdeen

# I've wandered in many far-off lands

And travelled many a mile

I've missed the folk I cherished most

The joy of a friendly smile

It warms up the heart of a wand'rer

The clasp of a welcoming hand

To greet me when, I return

Home to my native land
