Help needed please. Despite just having had the front garden tarmacced over so we could park the car there as the street was full up, the weeds are coming through thick and fast.

PLEASE can anybody recommend a permanent weedkiller?

And is it true that creorsote or salt make better weedkillers than the branded stuff you can buy in shops?

Yours in desperation,

with thanks,

John

There are many methods used to kill weeds. Lots of variables though. First is to identify the most prevalant weed present. And I dont know what part of the country you live in. Livestock salt will kill weeds however you cannott plant in that area for years. If you go with a solution..buy concentrated total vegetation killer. Used by professional landscapers. Double the suggested solution strength. Bearing in mind that it can kill pets. It is also absorbed into the human body. Through the skin and eyes. So wear gloves and be careful.PS. Roundup.. is useless. It was developed so that the consumer will buy it over and over again. Treat area on a day that is dry.

Have you got an agricultural suppliers nearby?? If they are still allowed to sell to general public you should be able to get a stronger solution of something. They'll be able to advise you. The Roundup I use to sell at a agricultural suppliers years ago was much more concentrated than the kind you get in garden centres.

Sodium chlorate is a good one but nasty and will render the ground useless. Did sheets of membrane go down before the tarmac was laid to suppress the weeds??

Thank you for your suggestions. Can`t say as we have any agricultural suppliers nearby, just your common and humble (and totally ineffective?!) garden centres. Can one buy total vegetation killer or livestock salt there; I doubt it; totally agree with you about branded names of Weedkiller, etc, they appear to be useless just to make sure you buy more and more!

You can purchase commercial strength weed killer at Lowes or Home Depot. Anything stronger.. you would need a liscence to buy.Nothing short of Livestock Salt will eliminate dollar weed.... wire grass.. or honeysuckle. On an area that is dirt.....You can also till up the ground DEEPLY.. then spend days racking out the runners,,, Cover with BREATHABLE landscape fabric. Not plastic.. That is garbage also.. and grows mold underneath. 8 or ten inches of mulch on top. Nothing can grow in total darkness.

Sounds like you forgot to put down a layer of 'Weedblock' before applying the blacktop. Oh dear!
