Johnny Depp or Oscar Wilde

Post by spot »

This was going to be a poll but I'll just make the point anyway.

What sort of short-sighted prat brings a case like this when the backfire is so much worse than the complaint. Who's dafter, Johnny Depp or Oscar Wilde? Because I reckon it's a close-run thing.
Johnny Depp is making a defamation claim over an April 2018 article in the Sun

I have eaten brighter bananas.
Johnny Depp has lost his libel case against the Sun newspaper over an article that called him a "wife beater".

Mr Depp, 57, sued the paper after it claimed he assaulted his ex-wife Amber Heard, which he denies. The Sun said the article was accurate.

Judge Mr Justice Nicol said the Sun had proved what was in the article to be "substantially true".

A spokesperson for the Sun thanked Ms Heard for "her courage".

The trial was heard over 16 days in July at the Royal Courts of Justice in London.

The judge says that on the balance of probability he hit her. The judge says nothing about whether she hit him, for or against, because that question has nothing to do with the libel case he was adjudicating.

My observation is that in Mr Depp's position I wouldn't have been so insane as to marry anyone on the planet, and even more so that I'd not have taken the Sun to court for libel. He needs therapy, not matrimony.
