Produce hydrogen from water and light

Post by BTS »

Leigh Sheppard, a PHD student in Ceramic Engineering at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) views a tiO2 photo-electrode used in an experiment to produce hydrogen from water and light May 18, 2005 in Sydney Australia. The University's Centre for Materials Research in Energy Conversion has developed a method to generate hydrogen from water using solar power and a catalyst of titanium dioxide. The process converts sunlight to electricity, which is then used to separate water into oxygen and hydrogen. Scientists working on the project at UNSW predict that a revolutionary new way to harness the power of the sun to extract clean and almost unlimited energy supplies from water will be a reality within seven years.

Mmmm....when I studied chemistry as a 12 year old (MANY years ago!) I always wondered why one couldn`t just add two particles of hydrogen to one of oxygen and get water!
