Teens will swear loyalty to Queen

Post by capt_buzzard »

Teenagers in Britain will be asked to pledge their loyalty to the Queen on their 18th birthday under plans being drawn up by the Home Secretary, Mr Charles Clarke.

Ministers believe the initiative could encourge young people to vote, involve them in their local communities and help them to become better citizens.

The scheme follows the recent launch of citizenship ceremonies in which recent immigrants of all ages sing their national anthem and pledge their allegiance to their home country.

The 18th-birthday events could be modelled on ''affirmation ceremonies'' held in Australia.

Australian teenagers swear a pledge of loyalty to their nation, promising to respect its rights and freedoms, and obey its laws. Mr Clarke said that a British equivalent was being considered as part of a drive to rackle race inequality and build bridges between different ethnic groups in Britain.

Couldn't find the actual article. This has been floated before. You can almost hear the collective F(*(*k o)(* in response. He's probably a closet republican trying to stir things up.

There was a reference to this in The Daily Telegraph. I *thought* Clarke looked like a fool.

That's good. I think they should swear loyalty to the Queen. I would if I was a British citizen. Although, in a way, I guess they shouldn't have to if they choose not to--I'm not a loyalist to our current President here in America...So, they should only have to if they want to.

You swear loyalty to the constitution do you not? rather than to an individual. Royalty has become an accepted institution, we put up with it something like this would raise a debate that the royal family probably don't want to have. Ask not what you can do for the queen but why should we tolerate them?

They may only be figure heads, but figure heads who demand to be bowed before, addressed as "your majesty" and who cost the tax payer dearly.

Roll on the revolution!

You're clearly at the nether end of the social scale! Fancy not knowing how to

address the Queen, let alone other members of the Royal Family, nobility, and

so on.

BTW, the cost per capita for the Queen & Royal Family was 62p last year.

I wish my country had NO social scale! Equality for all.

62p doesn't sound much but adds up to tens of millions of pounds altogether, and I can think of many more deserving causes on which that could have been spent: homelessness, drug shortages, hospital waiting lists, the list goes on.

By the way, I do know the correct form of address for the queen, it's "parasite".

I prefer equal opportunity for all, but that's a different thread.

*Every* country has a social scale. Surely you're aware of this?

Yes, it doesn't mean that every country MUST have a social scale.

No, my own mind.

I work, long hours and poor pay.
