Downs teen

Post by Dizz »

I am starting work this school year as an aide to a teen boy with downs. I haven't met him yet, but I'm thinking he's high functioning since he is 100% mainstreamed. My job is to shadow him and adjust his assignments and arrange his situation so he doesn't get overwhelmed.... Does anybody have any tips on these kids?

I already have experience with visually impaired and autistic kids... but teens are new for me.

I have worked with young adults with varying degrees of learning difficulty, including those affected by downs. The only really decent piece of advice l can give you is just to get to know him. They are as different from one another as you and l, though a common trait is that they are all affectionate, and if you click, well you'll never have a dull moment, they have great senses of humour in my experience and love jokes etc.

Reading it back this isn't really all that good, but l tried..

Good luck with it.
take a bite out of life it's there to be tasted!!
