THE INFERNO

I know this is a remnant of my periods of homelessness.

I sleep fitfully. But suddenly, in my dreams, I find myself outside of some sleazy bus station, in an obliterated ghetto neighborhood. I enter this building, and find myself at the foot of a wide concourse. It bustles merely with ghosts and other lost souls. The floors have been swabbed by janitors, and the air reeks with the smell of concentrate of cleaning fluid.

Ahead of me are a series of rows of portals, each row leading further into the abyss. As I move forward, the green linoleum floor curves upward initially, before descending into the abyss. I move along, and become more desperate as I do.

In the bowels of this bus station, I am in Hell. I'm in a labyrinth of desperation and I have entered a House of Horrors, a Dante's Inferno of destitution, filth, pornography, and prostitution. Outside is an alley, lined with stalls. I float down this alley where every vendor is a lewd whore, leering at me with avarice. Their cacophony is oppressive, these sirens of sex.

I return to the curbside, and wait for a bus. Boarding, I'm teleported to the pristine countryside. They leave me at a frontier outpost in smalltown America. I watch, as a parade goes by for the Fourth of July.
