As this is Burns Day......

Post by Chookie »

I feel I should remind you all of his existence, to that end I'm re-introducinbg you to a couple of his most famous poems:-

My luve is like a red,red rose

O, my luve's like a red, red rose,

That's newly sprung in June.

O, my luve's like the melodie,

That's sweetly play'd in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonie lass,

So deep in luve am I,

And I will luve thee still, my Dear,

Till a' the seas gang dry.

Till a' the seas gang dry, my Dear,

And the rocks melt wi' the sun!

O I will luve thee still, my Dear,

While the sands o' life shall run.

And fare thee weel, my only Luve,

And fare thee weel a while!

And I will come again, my Luve,

Tho' it were ten thousand mile!

And then, he dumps her...................

Ae Fond Kiss

Ae fond kiss, and then we sever!

Ae farewell, and then forever!

Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee,

Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee.

Who shall say that Fortune grieves him,

While the star of hope she leaves him?

Me, nae cheerfu' twinkle lights me,

Dark despair around benights me.

I'll ne'er blame my partial fancy:

Naething could resist my Nancy!

But to see her was to love her,

Love but her, and love for ever.

Had we never lov'd sae kindly,

Had we never lov'd sae blindly,

Never met - or never parted --

We had ne'er been broken-hearted.

Fare-thee-weel, thou first and fairest!

Fare-thee-weel, thou best and dearest!

Thine be ilka joy and treasure,

Peace, Enjoyment, Love and Pleasure!

Ae fond kiss, and then we sever!

Ae farewell, alas, for ever!

Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee,

Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee.
An ye harm none, do what ye will....

Ah yes, Rabbie Burns.

Parcel of Rogues is one of my favorites (interestingly directed at his fellow Scots whose sold their country into the union of course, and not the English as many suppose).

But anyway, Burns was a great man, a literary Genius, and his legacy is secure. A wonderful example of Scottish culture. :)

In a separate point, in Ireland we have Bloomsday to celebrate Joyce, ye have Burns night, why the English don't have a proper Shakespeare day escapes me! I love Shakespeare, he is truly amazing.
"We are never so happy, never so unhappy, as we imagine"

Le Rochefoucauld.

"A smack in the face settles all arguments, then you can move on kid."

As a poem or as a song and, if song which version?

I've copies by Ewan McColl, Dick Gaughan and Steeleye Span - I reckon Ewan McColl is probably closest but Steeleye possible more listenable. For all I love Dick Gaughan's music it's not one of his best tracks.

As for Bill Rattlestick Day - we cannot even celebrate out national day without being racist so what chance our poet's day?

As this is Burns Day......

Given the auspicious occasion I offer the following.

To the Salmond of Knowledge

It's Robbie Burns that fired the Scots

(like Murrayfield and whiskey)

To aim for Independence Day

E'en though it might be risky

But honour Alex Salmond too

Who burns with righteous fury

Insisting on our native rights

And leads us aye to glory

We drank foreby to ease the pain

Of foreign domination.

Tonight let's raise a glass to both

And take our proper station
Nullius in verba ... ☎||||||||||| ... To Fate I sue, of other means bereft, the only refuge for the wretched left.
When flower power came along I stood for Human Rights, marched around for peace and freedom, had some nooky every night - we took it serious.

Did you write that? You should sell it to the SNP. It beats my ode to the sprouts.

It can sink or swim. I thought it a day worthy of celebration.

Nothing changes-we still have a parcel 'o' roques running the nation. The SNP are proving to be just a much a self seeking bunch of shits as labour. Political shortbread and a wee nippy sweetie for the masses. Course the biggest roque of them all resides in number 10 downing street. It's not the english or foreign domination that cause us problems.

There is only one definitive version

YouTube - 09 - Parcel O' Rogues

not burns, but never mind.

YouTube - The Corries - Strangest Dream

you just see the unco guid starting a fight over which god to pray to.

Burns nights always amuse-you have all these pretentious tossers reading the likes of wicked willie's prayer and singing along to a a man's a man for a that and completely missing the irony of them being the very sort of pretentious tosspot he was talking about.

A fine version indeed and all the more effective for being a-capella

As to the rigidly righteous fighting over their Gods and the latter day Jacobites waiting to be saved from the English I offer you :-

:D you do get fed up with the shortie and black bun brigade. There was one contemporary comment in 1705 I read somewhere that the parliament going to Westminster was a very bad idea as it was too far to throw stones at the politicians. We should go back to throwing stones at politicians, goodness knows we need something to get through to the parcel of rogues we have now.

Scotland is one of the most urbanised industrial places in europe with what was a very good education system, but you wouldn't know it sometimes. The thing about burns is he was fairly typical in that he was an educated man, very talented, but like most scots of the time he could read and write. We've kind of lost that ethos that valued education and being your own man.

I was prepared to consider the SNP but donald trump and his golf course did it for me. Let's just sell our land to the highest bidder so they can build another bloody golf course. Wonder how much the snp received in donations from the trump organisation.

I'm away to look for a good stone.
