The Mermaid
"The Mermaid" by Susie Sawyer
If just for a moment you'll lend me your ear,
I've a bittersweet story I'd like you to hear.
A long time ago, on the wide open sea,
a lovely young Mermaid swam wild and free.
With a voice clear as crystal she sang to the sky,
sharing her music with ships passing by.
She sang from her heart in a language her own.
Her words echoed freely to places unknown.
The sailors would tell of the voice from the deep
that often would soothe them and sing them to sleep.
Now, Mermaids are taught they must always take care
to keep themselves hidden from Fish of the Air.
But Mermaids are known to do curious things,
forgetting the risk curiosity brings.
Perhaps that is why, on a warm summer night,
the Mermaid forgot to remain out of sight.
Entranced by the stars in the cloudless night sky,
she swam, unaware of the boat sailing by.
As she sang from the surface, the flash of her hair
caught the eye of a sailor who spotted her there.
He called to the Captain. In silence they steered
to the spot where the lovely young Mermaid appeared.
They thought she might flee, but that wasn't the case.
She greeted the men with a smile on her face.
Swimming up to the sailor, she held out her hand.
Though she spoke not a word, he could still understand.
The sailor dove in and the Mermaid began
to swim in a circle around the young man.
With a swirl and a splash, the sea started to quake,
the Mermaid and sailor caught up in its wake.
The Captain looked on as a blinding white light
pulled them under the waves and they vanished from sight.
After searching all night for his lost sailor friend,
the Captain decided his search had to end.
As he steered toward the east, blinking tears from his eyes,
a rock swathed in foam held a welcome surprise.
The light of the sun behind clouds thin as lace
cast a warm amber glow on the couple's embrace.
For during the night they had fallen in love –
the girl from the sea and the man from above.
They held one another. In silence they wept,
both knowing their secret must always be kept.
With a vow that their hearts wouldn't ever be free,
the Mermaid returned to her home in the sea.
The sound of her music fell silent that day
as the two men reluctantly drifted away.
The years slowly passed while the friends grew apart,
and the story remained in the old Captain's heart.
But one day, he finally spoke of that night.
He wanted to wait ‘till the moment was right.
He offered his story to someone he knew
he could trust with the secret . . .
That someone is you.

How lovely and so sad. :-1
I've always felt the romance of mermaids and as a kid used to wrap up my legs and pretend I was one.

The Mermaid
Abbey,
When I was a kid we lived in a two story home and my rellys lived downstairs.
My cousin Peggy and I used to play "Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid" (you should watch that if you haven't seen it....old, black and white fab movie) She was sooooo damn bossy....I always had to be the fishergirl at the top of the stairs throwing the line down to the bottom of the stairs to catch the beautiful mermaid.
I still tease her today about why she always had to be the pretty mermaid and me a fishergirl who was laden down with poles and smelly fish

The Mermaid
THE SHELL
by Roisin Moriarty
They walk along the beach
Hand in hand
He wears a soldier’s uniform
Her glossy hair catches the ocean’s light
The sky arcs over them
A blue bowl
From which the sun strikes down
On the rolling sea
Firing splinters of brilliant light into eyes
Already blinded by love
He searches the pale sand exhaling beneath their feet
A gift for her who leans into him
And gives him the comfort
Of her warm, round body
Something the sea has given up
Tucked by a finger of ocean
Under a sentinel of rock
A whorled shell
Twined around peach colored pearl
Like an innocent dawn
A hungry ear listening for the pulse of life
He draws it out
Hands it to her
Watches her face break open in a smile
So sweet and warm and full of expectation
It stops his breath
She presses the shell to her ear
Where his fingers have recently brushed
But instead of the hushing sea
She hears an echo of distant voices
Remember me.
They walk on down the beach
Hand in hand
She carries the shell
Innocent as the dawn, hungry for the pulse of life
And the sea murmurs around them
Remember me.

The Mermaid
The sea and the solitary soul
Quiet, near the sea
But miles away from the crowd
Stands the solitary figure
Whose gaze pierces the depth
The dark sea and the dark night
Appears mysterious and too frightening
But she stands unbaffled and remote
The dark sea echoes within her
Remote and alluring…
Both are calm
But with a tumult inside
She is now closer to the sea
Herself the solitary figure
To be one with the sea
To share the isolation
And the alluring mystery
