A Summer Afternoon

Post by chonsigirl »

Summer sun

melting down hillside

of golden poppies

shading our footsteps

as we drag the weight of the world

behind us,

led by an ageless one

who calls encouragement as we struggle

with refuse for some,

an enchantment for us,

cardboard boxes wiping out our tracks

as we lift our heads

into windless heat,

with the goal always ahead

but so far away

wrinkled hand grasps mine

to pull me up beside her,

we reach the summit of delight,

overlooking the Eternal City

through the haze of smog

as my brothers line up beside me,

settling into their vehicles of imagination

to race down the hill first,

dust clouds of laughter

screams into the clouds

we gather the wildflowers

into chains to adorn our carriages,

yellow gossamer filaments

that the wise one tells me

will always remember this day,

it is engraved upon their hearts

like it will be ours,

as she places the crown of memory

upon my head,

we squeeze into life’s small box

and ride down the hill forever

****

I wrote this last month for my grandmother, who passed away this morning. I will always remember these days of my childhood with her, and her kind heart and ready smile for us all. :-4

Chonsi, I'm sorry.

What a beautiful poem for her.
