Melbourne Cup 2013: Our experts rate the runners

Normally because you never quite know with a Melbourne Cup I usually pick by the shortest name or the pretty colours the riders are wearing.

I'm putting $20 on "Fawkner" for a win and a place. Why? because a lot of my past family members are buried in Fawkner Cemetary. (probably not the best omen but anyhoo. :)

I was drawn to Dunaden and Sea Moon. Mostly because they're near the top and I like the names (OK, I read Dunaden as Dunedin and liked the idea of a Kiwi in Oz).

I'll take $20 on Sea Moon

You know? sometimes I think the way they name some of these horses is just to take the mick out of the race callers. :wah:

Gorgeous day here though, Flemington will be packed to the rafters.

There's a lot of money In England going on Royal Empire and I tend to agree with them.

Although rocked with doping scandal, this young pretender Is out of the Godolphin stable.

He hasn't got much form but he's fast.... worth a gamble.

3:06pm: FIORENTE wins the Melbourne Cup! Finally, a breakthrough for trainer Gai Waterhouse.

The race favourite staged a memorable battle with the written-off Red Cadeaux down the straight to triumph. Mount Athos takes third in a memorable 2013 Melbourne Cup.

It's another Melbourne Cup for jockey Damien Oliver and some form of redemption after he spent a large portion of the last year suspended.

It was intriguing to watch two previous second-placed horses in this race battle for the title down the Flemington straight.

One good reason I stay away from flat racing and stick to National Hunt. I couldn't pick a flat winner If my life depended on It.

Shame the race was marred with such tragedy.

It's the way they breed them now ...useless after they've raced . Back in the old days they were sturdier and less spindly. If you look at phar lap as a case in hand he carried 54kg extra and still won. If you did that to a horse today they'd die as soon as jumping out of the barriers.

Anyway here's the actual race . I think I came sixth.
