Rooter not working, please help

Post by Aura »

Hi I have an ADSL Briadband Modem Ethernet rooter which connects to the internet but lately I have to keep pressing the button at the back to reboot it or I can't get on the internet. I am with TalkTalk and I rang up their technical line but I couldn't understand what the Indian woman was saying.

She at first asked me the model and the number then said Talk Talk couldn't recognise the number, and I would have to call my service provider. I said it had their name on it.

Then they asked me to ring back on my mobile while they checked the line. I said I didn't have much credit and she said someone could come to my house at a cost of £49, so I opted to use my mobile and had to go through all the options again and ended up with a different person, so I had to explain everything again.

Can you tell me how I can get the modem repaired and if it could be wearing out. The woman said she could talk me through it as I said I wasn't technically minded. This is going to be complicated, seeing as I can't understand what she is saying.

Not all the lights are lite on the modem and the light that shows I am connected is orange, while only the power button is green all the others are orange.

Many thanks and hope you can help me?

The most likely problem is a fault on the line to the exchange and that is outside of your control.

It is almost impossible to diagnose connection problems blind like this but some general advice :-

If you are connecting wirelessly then try using an ethernet cable for a direct connection.

Turning everything off and then restart the router followed by the computer - this will eliminate most comms problems within your equipment.

Try telephoning your line provider (generally dial 151 in the UK) and ask them to check the broadband connection on you line.

If they report it as clean then contact your ISP support line, tell them what you have done and ask then to run a remote check on the router for hardware problems. They will probable try to tell you that it's the line or your computer but insist that the line has been checked and that you want the router checked.

If none of that works then you need someone in to check it out from your end.

So, through all of your troubleshooting.

Have you actually powered the thing off, or unplugged it, and powered it back on?

Pull the power plug, and wait half a minute or a minute, and plug it back in.

That will clear out memory and all registers completely.

Yes, it IS different than pressing the reset button.

Good thinking! All this wonderful new technology, yet how often does everything freeze up and just stop working. PC's, laptops, ipads, digi-boxes, even tv's all seem to need to be switched off completely on a regular basis :wah:

Then ring them again and ask them to test the line and the router, they are able to test their own routers remotely. Don't go spending any money yet! They won't help you at all if you don't have their router connected. When you ring ask for a manager and explain you've been fobbed off too many times.

Are you still within your contract to talk talk?

I just recently left talk talk and returned to BT because of the crappy service I got from them.

I would go with BT but they are expensive and don't offer free broadband. I don't know what deal I could get with them.

Changing the filter Is the first and cheapest option to the problem because I doubt It's your router Its'elf.

You can get them at Argos and this Is what you need.

Buy Belkin ADSL In-Line Filter at Argos.co.uk - Your Online Shop for Wireless peripherals and adaptors.

It's plugged Into your phone socket.

If you still have a problem, first of all, If you can't get any sense from the Indian operator, always ask to speak to their supervisor, then ask them to check the bandwidth you are recieving. If It's set too low, this Is why your router would drop out during heavy usage.

If you have had your router less than a year, ask for a replacement.

IF you still have a problem after all this......... change to BT.

Hi yeah I have changed to another filter but I think its the modem dying because I had to reboot again to connect to the net. I would go with BT, but they don't offer free broadband deals. My current modem dates from 2007 apparently, Is the Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit ADSL2+ Modem Router any good, and can i use it even through i have an account with TalkTalk?*

Apparently my internet speed is 10m
