A couple points not mentioned in this CBC story :
1) We're in the grip of a brutal Arctic cold snap. The temperature is about -16C, and with the gusting wind, the windchill index reading is -30C.
It's criminally irresponsible to leave a child unattended in an idling vehicle on a pleasant spring day. It's madness to leave a child in a vehicle when it is so viciously frigid.
2)The collision was not accidental. Einstein pursued the stolen van in his other vehicle. When he encountered it, he decided that ramming it would be a good idea. Fortunately, nobody was injured.
I certainly hope they catch the car thief, but I also hope Pops is charged with something... perhaps reckless endangerment :

Halton Regional police say the father started the minivan to warm it, then left his young child in the vehicle for a moment while he ran back into his Oakville house.
When he returned, the minivan was gone.

Dunno what he could be charged with here, 'though IIRC there's something
about leaving unattended vehicles running (in a public place). It doesn't seem
a wonderl story, does it. Good that no-one was hurt. I'll be interested to see
whether any further nwes reports surface.
In the UK, we don't often get -16C temperatures! I do remember motorbiking
about 300 miles somewhere in about -14, though! Pfffft!
In the UK, in winter, an unattended car being warmed up like that is called a
"steamer" in the argot. This practice is bad for the engine.

There was a similar story reported by the CBC two years ago with a tragic ending.
A man in Montreal left his vehicle idling while he was away from it. Unfortunately, the tailpipe was backed into a snowbank. Exhaust fumes filled the car, asphyxiating his baby daughter.
Last summer, a woman was charged for leaving her child in a locked car for hours under the hot sun, as she played the slots in a casino.

...and the enviornment. An idling engine spews out a lot more pollution, and, yes, it is very hard on the engine. I wish more motorists were aware of these facts.
The radio broadcast mention that Oakville (the city were this occured) has an anti-idling bylaw.
