Fall colours yet, anyone?

I went to a spring festival in Canberra, last weekend, and as I ducked a swooping magpie and tiptoed through the tulips (sneezing merrily) - I wondered how the to half were enjoying autumn. Is it too early yet for Fall colours????

Ours here in the city are just barely starting to change..further up in Northern Ontario......colours are beginning to shine through!

mid-October is the most ultimate time!

Yeah, leaves are starting to change and come down in my part of the midwest. I miss the smell of burning leaves though. They took that away from us in most places. You can still smell woodsmoke on cold nights, from houses with fireplaces. I expect we'll lose that too in the near future. The more we progress, the more they take away from us.

The leaves are just starting to change here. A cold front is on the way, so I imagine next week they will really start changing.

We noticed the change starting during our recent visit to Geordieland. By last weekend it was just starting in the Midlands too.

Just starting to change a bit here now, but I noticed last month the leaves starting to fall then, so it seemed a tad early. Love Autum, favourite time of the year.

South Glou is on the change. I was out with the dogs in the Cotswolds last week and It was stunning. Around Bath race race-course is particually beautifull also. My favourite time of the year. :-6

There's certainly something about autumn. I think it's probably my favourite season. But each season sort of gives flavour to each other season. Maybe it's a ying and yang thing. If you have a hot summer, you appreciate the winter frost.

Autumn for me is softer light, longer shadows, falling leaves and the smell of woodsmoke.

I flew into New York city once in the late Fall afternoon, and we must have done a loop and come down low over the Catskill Mountains. Unbelievable !!!

I love the suddenly cooler evenings and mornings, dew on the grass and the mist low over the fields.

The first leaves are just starting to fall and my Amaranka is beginning to turn red, as are the crab apples.

Ah, misty England - and in the country green moss on the East Anglia fences and tree trunks, and leaves starting to fall. And breezes starting to rise. And the smell of woodsmoke in the old pubs at twilight.

I'm not sure what amaranka is, Clodhopper - but love crab apple.

Amaranka - sort of small tree which does white blossom in spring, red berries in summer and startlingly bright red leaves in autumn.

I've always heard it called an "Amaranka" but a quick internet search didn't find it, so maybe it's really called something different.

not really, most trees are green year round, the ones that do change colour a bit but it is short lived and not anything like they do in Canada.

The west of Ireland is almost obscenely green, so green it strips layers off your optic nerve and soaks like everlasting rain onto the standing stones of your moss encrusted psyche. Wonderful !!!!!

No fall color where we're at now, certainly... there's a lotta' black and ash just out west of here, though. :p

I suspect that New England is probably on the verge, however... just by watching members of "The Julie Chen Show" shivering about outside in NYC on tv the other morning.

A poem for the fall season......

November Morning

by Evaleen Stein

A tingling, misty marvel

Blew hither in the night,

And now the little peach-trees

Are clasped in frozen light.

Upon the apple-branches

An icy film is caught,

With trailing threads of gossamer

In pearly patterns wrought.

The autumn sun, in wonder,

Is gayly peering through

This silver-tissued network

Across the frosty blue.

The weather-vane is fire-tipped,

The honeysuckle shows

A dazzling icy splendor,

And crystal is the rose.

Around the eaves are fringes

Of icicles that seem

To mock the summer rainbows

With many-colored gleam.

Along the walk, the pebbles

Are each a precious stone;

The grass is tasseled hoarfrost,

The clover jewel-sown.

Lou lou belle - I'm with you on the regression. Not only do I love kicking leaves, I actually roll in them. Literally. Ahhhhhhh...

G Man - I'm so sorry about your fires. We get them here too. And are gearing up for a hot summer. People are already starting the backburning.

Kathy - lovely poem, thankyou! Mary O'Hara is one of my favourite Irish traditional singers. I'll post some other songs of hers. I think there's a few on youtube. She has one of the lightest, purest colleen type voices ever, sings often in Irish Gaelic and had quite a story. She married young. Her husband died young. She entered a convent. Came out again much much later and I think is singing again now, and has actually remarried. I'll look it up.

Saturday morning here. Spring .. spring cleaning. Birds swooping. Pollen... far removed from falling leaves, the Catskill mountains, the Cotswolds (I was sitting on a stone wall deep in the woods there once, freezing, and it was autumn.. and suddenly there was dogs baying, and all the hunt came through... what a sight!!)
