We shot girl

Post by capt_buzzard »

The admission by the Provisional IRA in Derry yesterday that one of its members shot dead a 14-year old girl 32 years ago, should have been made at that time, one of the girl's teachers said yesterday.

The IRA has apologised to the girl's family.

Kathleen Feeney died when a sniper opened fire on a British Army patrol in the area, close to the teenager's home, on the evening of November 14,1973.

At the time the IRA said a British soldier had killed her and that the soldier was later killed by them in retaliation. No official record, however, exists relating to the alleged retaliatory killing.

The Army, in a statement in the Derry Journal, the IRA admitted the British Army's version was correct, and they ''apologised unreservedly'' to the Feeney family.

Ms Roisin Lynch, vice-principal of St Cecilia's School in Derry, who taught Kathleen, said she believed the IRA's apology should have been made at the time of the shooting.'' It is years too late and I feel personally the truth should have been told then and there.
