Portuguese Music Dulce Ponte with Andrea Bocelli
I'd like to share some of the beautiful Fado music with you that I first heard on my trip to Portugal about 8 years ago. I had the pleasure of meeting a Portuguese musician, Dulce Pontes, a few times in Portugal and in Noo Joisey. Hope you enjoy her music....
From Wikipedia...
Fado (translated as destiny or fate) is a music genre which can be traced from the 1820s in Portugal, but probably with much earlier origins. In popular belief, fado is a form of music characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor. However, in reality fado is simply a form of song which can be about anything, but must follow a certain structure.
Some enthusiasts claim that fado's origins are a mixture of African slave rhythms with the traditional music of Portuguese sailors and Arabic influence.

WOW Zapata,
You are the 1st person that I know who has heard of this song. Have you listened to Amalia Rodrigues? She's like the "Queen" of Fado music :wah:
I felt so blessed to have met Dulce.

I just listened to Amalia-ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS! Such a rich voice and yet so wistful. Como se dice "Fado" en ingles? It's not "anger' is it?
I may have to buy some of her music as well as Dulce's.

:wah: Oops. My mistake-"Fado" would be Portugese, not Spanish, my mistake.
Thank you for posting the info. I'm always happy to hear a new (to me) style of music. Ahh, so much music, so little time.

Hello Kaz, Zap, Shared and Bez....I'm glad that you like the Fado music. I adore Bocelli. My friend gets ticket to see him every year. I'm going to make sure that I go next time to his concert. He performs quite often in Noo Joisey.
I love the Fado music...it is so haunting. Dulce Ponte is a wonderful performer. I've seen her in concert 3 times now...once in Portugal and twice in NJ. She now has her wee son playing the guitar on stage:D

Thanks so much for calling my attention to Dulce Ponte. I didn't have a chance to look for other things by her today but maybe this weekend. How sweet that she's got her son performing with her.

Oh Zapata,
Thank you so much for taking an interest in my thread about Dulce Ponti.
My family had tickets to see her in concert in Noo Joisey in September, 2001....shortly after the "911 attack." Needless to say, she had already cancelled due to her pregnancy....
When we saw her in concert a few years later, her wee boy who must have been about 6 yrs. old, just pranced onto the stage, sat down, and played beautiful music on his guitar...mega amazing...
I especially love her "Lagrimas" cd....
Have you ever listened to Nana Mouskouri...You might like her if you like Dulce.
~~just an aside ~~ do I know you in another life~~

Yeah, me too. I've got a 45 & an album with Andy singing it, both of which I've copied to a disc. and cassette. So, I'm all set, no matter where I am. My Jag is a relic (20 yrs. old but pristine) It doesn't have anything but a radio & cassette player. It did have a built-in phone, however.

It's a fado morning here. There are two Amalia Rodrigues songs on the Cafe Portugal CD, Kathy - Fado Lisboeta and Fado Alfacinha.
I was lucky enough to get to a performance in Lisbon last November. The singer I liked best was Yola Dinis and I have a CD of her songs - now on my iPod (with the Cafe Portugal music) - and I'll play those today as we drive.
Thank you for this great thread.
I love fado. I love the real flamenco too, just as raw and visceral. A bit like the old man with the uillean pipes sitting on a rock gazing at the Atlantic waves and wailing out the sorrows of humanity.
A dark place. But music brings sunshine. Like laughter and friendship.

I'd never struck them before, Kathy - Romy said they are German but they are here singing in French.. I must watch it again.
I think I preferred Nana Mouskouri when she sang in Greek.
I'm still slightly in Greek mode here. My aquarobics ladies' book club (:sneaky:) had as our last read a recent novel by Cristos Tsiolkas called 'The Slap'. It was a very confronting exposition of cultural clashes in Australia. The author is a Greek Aussie, so I've been - when life permits - trying to explore Greekness here.. okay I'm off on a tangent.. sorry.. um back to Portuguese music. :-6
