what do you think of foreign music?
If you guys come across foreign music, do you find it a turn off or weird to listen to?? It was funny, there was this song where there was a asian version and an english version, but before my friend heard the english version he was like, this song sounds terrible, then i showed him the english version and then he was like, hey whats this song? it sounds nice..haha, and it was the same song?!?
does the language change your view with the song? not to offend anyone, just curious...

I like some opera, but a song I loved was the Italian entry in the 1992 Eurovision Song Contest . It only finished 9th I think but it was called "Rhapsodia". I can't remember who it was by, but maybe Accadue can.
Really though, the best "foreign" music is American :guitarist
Also like "Lo Siento Mi Vida" by Linda Ronstadt which is mainly Spanish

Try to listen to Idan Reichel.
He's an israeli singer and this song combine some Africa stuffs also (the guy at the beginning sing in African language).
Mimahamakim - Idan Rrichel
Mimahamakim = from depths.. from depths I called you come back to me ..
Someone (from the Comments & Responses) translated the chorus from Hebrew:
Who is calling to you tonight - listen!
Who sings out loud - to your window?
Who puts his soul so you'll be happy?
Who will put his hand to build your house?
Who will give his life and put them beneath you?
Who like the ashes to your feet will live?
Who will love you more than all of your lovers?
Who will save you from all bad spirits?
From the depths.

Being Irish, I am somewhat foreign myself, as of course my country has a Gaelic musical culture as well as the Contemporary anglo-american one, and other European classical and folk influences. I love purely American music like Jazz, Rock and Roll, Soul, Blues, Country, its all excellent, I also love Classical music, which I suppose is to be expected as I am European, but Irish people came late into classical music, via Britain, I also love British folk music as there is a big cross over there with Irish trad, and Spanish, East European, Russian, and other folk traditions, and also the 20th century music of European's like Jaques Berrel, and other, similar artists though I am no authority. In terms of world music, I am not great with say Indian music or African music, though I like it, and south american as well, Chinese Music and other SE asian music I find quite difficult as its not written using the same basic scales or grammar as European music so it sounds strange to my ears.
Interestingly, there are some similarities between Arabic music and Irish music somehow, I don't know how that came about, and you would have to play and listen a lot to Irish music to hear the similarities in the way the instruments are played, but its definetly there.

No problem at all with foreign music - some of my favourates are Dolar Brand and several of the Polish Jazz bands.
I have more difficulty with musical traditions that use different scales but will still listen to them quite happily.
I struggle more with lyrics in foreign languages - I have enough difficulty with English so trying to decypher other languages can detract from the pleasure.
I also struggle with highly stylised presentation - a lot of opera is not to my taste.
In short, it is not the foreign music that I find difficult ........

I am American, but enjoy listening to British music much more than most of the stuff on the radio here. In general, I'll listen to music in any language. Most of my favorites are in English, French, or German, though.

You can download some of the videos for free if you want a look. Best group is altan. Course you do realise it's not foreign music to me.
Was in Glasgow on saturday. In Buchanan street playing in front of an old police box (one like the tardis from Dr Who) was a red indian folk group wearing tribal dress. Wish i had had a camera with me. How often do you get to see something like that. I think they were actually one of the south american bands that tour here from peru but the guy said he was from iowa when I asked him.
