Down Under
Traveling in a fried-out combie
On a hippie trail, head full of zombie
I met a strange lady, she made me nervous
She took me in and gave me breakfast
And she said,
"Do you come from a land down under?
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."
Buying bread from a man in Brussels
He was six foot four and full of muscles
I said, "Do you speak-a my language?"
He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich
And he said,
"I come from a land down under
Where beer does flow and men chunder
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."
Lying in a den in Bombay
With a slack jaw, and not much to say
I said to the man, "Are you trying to tempt me
Because I come from the land of plenty?"
And he said,
"Oh! Do you come from a land down under? (oh yeah yeah)
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."

While we're on the subject of 80's stuff, did any of you ever see a movie that came out in 1980 called, FOXES? I thank my lucky stars I saw it, because it was one of the most moving films I've seen in my life. It wasn't meant to be all that great: basically a kind of cheap, sensationalist movie about a gang of sexy teenaged girls in L.A. who came from broken families. But it had a tremendous effect on me. This was one of Jodie Foster's early films, done not too long after, TAXI DRIVER.
The basic protagonist of this film was, (I think,) Marie Curie, who had previously been a member of an all-girls L.A. band called The Runaways. I guess starring in this movie was a step up for her careerwise. Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't Joan Jett and Lita Ford connected with this group, too?
This film was one of the most inflamed tearjerkers of all times. That final scene in the ER in a hospital where Marie is taken after being in a car accident, is unforgettable. This poor abandoned girl is lying on a gurney with a team of emergency room doctors working feverishly to save her life. She's wearing a clear plastic oxygen mask and when she suddenly coughs up blood into it, you know she's going to die. Her friends/fellow running mates are all gathered at the foot of the gurney.
The theme song for this movie was, "On The Radio," by Donna Summer, which couldn't have been more fitting. Everytime I hear that, I get chills. I highly recommend renting this movie!

Hi Kumin,
"Foxes" was probably one of the best movies to come out of the early 80s. Or maybe it was 1979. Close. The book was great. It was Cherie Curie who played "Annie" and yes, she and Joan and Lita were in the Runaways.
This movie's out on video isnt it? Y'all should rent it. And get the book too! Good stuff.

Hiya RedGlitter!
Thanks for setting me straight regarding the Curie sisters, identical twins that they are. Makes you wonder where they are and what they're doing today, doesn't it? In my other post, I was going to mention that Cherie Curie's stage name, (her character's name,) had been Annie, but there were so many different things I wanted to say about the movie, I forgot about that tidbit until it was too late.
Did you know that the Curie sisters cut an album which was recorded with the group TOTO doing backup? Presumably they did this album after, FOXES. I have a copy of it and it's a damned good album, much better than some solo album I also have by Lita Ford. (That one, I listened to once but haven't listened to it again since then, ditto for Joan Jett's album.) Perhaps you already know that the guys who became known in the 80's as, "TOTO," were actually a bunch of L.A. studio musicians who had been around for a long time before then.
I never knew that FOXES was a book before it was a movie.
As for renting/buying a copy of FOXES, I doubt if I would do that because trying to recreate the impact a movie had on you the first time you saw it, can never be done. (Actually, I DID rent a copy of FOXES once.) I made the mistake of thinking that was something that could be done years earlier, with Franco Zeffirelli's ROMEO & JULIET.
By the way, judging by your picture on Forum Garden, you're a Hot Mama!

That version of Romeo and Juliet is also one of my favorites, but you're right about the impact... I was bowled over when I saw it as a 13 year old, but it wasn't quite so fascinating when I saw it again in my 20s. It's in my rental queue again right now, believe it or not ... we'll see how it stands up to the test of time.
Z did another movie that's very hard to find called "Brother Sun, Sister Moon" about Saint Francis of Assisi that I still enjoy, although it's obviously rather dated.
If I remember correctly, here's a chronological listing of Zeffirrelli's works since he got into films. Are you aware that he first made a name for himself in theater?
1. Taming Of The Shrew, 1967
2. Romeo & Juliet, 1968
3. Brother Sun, Sister Moon, Early '70's
4. The Champ, 1978, (a remake of a tearjerker boxing movie which originally
came out in the '30's, and starred Mickey Rooney.
5. Endless Love, 1981, (starring Brooke Shields.)
6. La Traviata, 1983
7. Tea With Mussolini
I was a passionate Zeffirelli fan up until, LA TRAVIATA, which I didn't see. Before then, I never missed a movie of his. I also haven't seen, TEA WITH MUSSOLINI, but Zeffirrelli is great. I don't know what he's doing at this point.

Does anybody remember a really eerie, Impressionist-type of song that came out around 1979/80 called, Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime? It was done by the Korgis, who seem to have been a one-hit-wonder group. They released a whole album of that kind of music, on which Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime was featured. The name of the album, (which I have,) is Dumb Waiters. At this point, I'd doubt it's still in print.
