I've got this thing where I won't buy something if I can make it cheaper. Even though I know damn well that I'll never actually make it myself.

Can being a cheapskate be good?

Something like lazy mash then I buy the packet as I prefer the taste to mashing my own but you can go too far with buying it already made or frozen. That to me is a waste of money and lazy.

I wish I was more like that, I tend to splurge then regret it when the bank statement arrives.:-5

See? I'd be more likely to find a way to attach wheels to my running shoes.

If you know you won't make it, shop around and buy it at a better price. There is nothing wrong with that.

I find the best stuff secondhand. Even books.

I came across my favourite sociologist in a secondhand bookstore. And the furniture has way more style.

I tend to go around a shop with a shopping cart and I fill it with things I think I need. Then I go through the cart and put just about everything back. That's about as long as I need to own it.

I'm getting my son a pair of those 'wheels' tomorrow but not stupid enough to spend £80 for them. They sell them in Hamleys, called something like Street Skaters. You put them only any type of shoes or trainers, they light up as well and are only £15.

Are they the exact same make? I've seen them on eBay but they are a cheaper version. Not heard of Sportsworld.

This is very weird... two things you said are identical traits of mine. I will not buy clothing knowing I could make the item. But also knowing full well, I never will. In TJ Max... I walk through the store pick up 10 things I like, and then feel great when I put everything back. " I dont need this" " I can live without this" etc.......

I think there's a definite line between being a cheapskate and being frugal.

I'd prefer to make stuff myself or to give a handmade gift (and to receive) and I am a coupon clipper. I'm a spendthrift too, so being frugal in some ways allows me to be too casual with my money in other ways. :wah: :o

I dont like wasting $ but if its something that will last I dont mind spending the money. I usually do my research if its a high $ item. And I take care of the things I spend $ on.

...and it won't fall to pieces in two years.

I recently bought a fantastic West German Normende AM/FM/SW radio (circa 1970) in my corner thrift shop for $3.00. Far better quality than today's junk, and I even used it to flirt with the cashier. (I told her the radio was much older than she was. It isn't !:D )

You're a shrewd shopper that knows quality and style and environmental responsibility are more important than consuming the relentless output of third world factories.

Besides, it's fun !
