Ohio Amber Alert

The AMBER Alert System began in 1996 when Dallas-Fort Worth broadcasters teamed with local police to develop an early warning system to help find abducted children. AMBER stands for America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response and was created as a legacy to 9-year-old Amber Hagerman, who was kidnaped while riding her bicycle in Arlington, Texas, and then brutally murdered. Other states and communities soon set up their own AMBER plans as the idea was adopted across the nation.

Authorities say a 7-year-old boy who was taken from an Ohio apartment by his gun-carrying father following a homicide was dropped off with relatives and found safe in Indiana.

Police in Troy in southwest Ohio said they are still trying to find 50-year-old Jeff Bedinger, who is suspected in the Thursday killing of the boy's adult brother at the apartment the child shared with their mother.

Police said the 22-year-old man who was killed was Bedinger's stepson.

The shooting happened at about 4 p.m. Detective Capt. Chris Anderson says the boy's mother was out of the home prior to the shooting, "and arrived back to find this tragedy."
