Buying FG Poll

Post by Oscar Namechange »

I'd appreciate all views and please be honest....

Imagine this scenario....

You are at a Market In an uptown area. An expensive market selling furnature, antiques etc.

Every stall seller Is smartly dressed. The women are In dress's, the men In suits. The buyers are the smart casual dressed type with money to spend.

One stall Is selling genuine gold jewellery, gold sovereigns, gold krugerrands and diamond rings.

The stall holder has business cards on the table showing a mobile phone number.

He Is wearing a vest, track suit bottoms, shaven headed, covered up the arms and neck In tattoo's. He Is dripping In gold from his neck, wrists and every finger. His wife Is wearing an old track suit.

Would you buy from him?

Please be honest.

Depends on his prices.

How would you warranty the genuine nature of his wares?

His style of dress would not put me off much.

I would be more leery if he was in a three-piece suit in such a venue.

The biggest thieves dress very well.

Can you be sure of any goods sold at an open market?

The dress would not put me off but the use of a mobile 'phone number would ring alarm bells.

The dress would not put me off but the use of a mobile 'phone number would ring alarm bells. Well I bought a Teapot there for £14 on the guess It was worth more... hunch paid off and It's going on E bay starting £49.99 tonight... I digress..

I'll explain the situation...we know a guy, a lovely guy, he really Is the salt of the earth who's gone Into buying and selling gold. He's also an extremely honest guy. He's been doing these market stalls now for some time and just doesn't sell anything. Yet on Sunday, another stall selling gold rings and who's sellers were dressed very smartly had people buying like bee's around a pot. We have watched people walk up to our guy's stall, take one look at him and walk on yet he has some beautiful stuff for sale.

He's been asking Peter what he's doing wrong and we believe It's the tacky business cards and his appearance. We have tried explaining to him that people buy people ( Peter and I were both In sales and marketing for years). He;s going to very up market markets In Bath, not some old car boot sale. We've tried telling him that If he's going to be a professional Jeweller, he has to look the part and cover up the tattoo's, dress smart and not look like Mr T gone mad In a gold factory.

Now... we could be wrong... but he's just not selling so It has to be something and we don't think It's his prices. I'm a great believer In sales that first Impressions count... what do you think ?

Fine, dress up to make an impression but unless I thought that there was a fixed base to go back to I would not buy - the business card has to be believable and trust does not come with a flash suit.

So do you think If he stuck to the one market Instead of flitting about trying out others, people would see him there every week and that would make a difference? That could be the answer.

Certainly being seen in the same place every week is an essential. If you're there one week and not the next then no-one will have confidence that they have any comeback in case of a complaint.

Also, what's the betting that he does not take plastic. It might well cost him 2.5% but it does give the punter some degree of confidence.

Ahhh that's another thing... No he doesn't take plastic. He's selling Items that lowest scale £200 and I don't think he's appealing to the Impulse buyer...cash only.... by Jove you have hit on something there... thanks... we are just trying to help him do well.

I still wish he'd cover those tattoo's up though. :wah:

It's all about giving the punter confidence, should things go wrong, that they have a comeback on the seller.

I have to laugh at these up market markets. You buy a throw at a car boot for example for £3 but there, It becomes a ' Textile' for £25

As for Impulse buying... I very nearly came home with a stuffed Fox until my better half stepped In.

Bryn makes some good points.

There a lot of people who would be put off by that appearance.

And taking plastic might be useful.

Being in the same place each week would have plus and minus. With that kind of merchandise, being predictable would offer opportunities for the type of folks who might want to separate him from his goods.

Does he have a mustache? He sounds like a 70's porn dude. Not sure I'd let him have my credit card number. I wouldn't buy gold from anyone but a jeweler anyway cuz I can't tell real gold from fake right off.

Really? A vest with no shirt? A nice white cotton shirt with clean blue jeans is better than what he is wearing.
When choosing between two evils, I always like to take the one I've never tried before.
