The best national anthem?

Post by joona »

I had a hard time choosing between Marseillaise and The Internationale. I went with the latter because of it's message.

Arise, you branded by a curse,

You whole world of the starving and enslaved!

Our indignant intellect boils,

Ready to lead us into a fight to the death!

We will destroy this world of violence

Down to the foundations, and then

We will build our new world.

He who was nothing will become everything!

|: This will be the final

and decisive battle.

With the Internationale

the human race will arise! :|

No one will grant us deliverance,

No God, no Tsar, no hero.

We will win our liberation,

With our very own hands!

To throw down oppression with a skilled hand,

To take back what is ours –

Fire up the furnace and hammer boldly,

while the iron is still hot!

|: This will be the final... :|

Only we, the workers of the world-wide

Great army of labour,

Have the right to own the land,

But the parasites - never!

And if the great thunder rolls

Over the pack of dogs and executioners,

For us, the sun will still

Shine on with its fiery rays!

|: This will be the final... :|

Unfortunately there can only be ten different poll options. Believe me, there are many other anthems I would have wanted to include.

The Star-Spangled Banner

—Francis Scott Key, 1814

O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,

What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?

Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,

O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?

And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.

O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen thro' the mists of the deep,

Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,

What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,

As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?

Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,

In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream:

'Tis the star-spangled banner: O, long may it wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore

That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,

A home and a country should leave us no more?

Their blood has wash'd out their foul footsteps' pollution.

No refuge could save the hireling and slave

From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave:

And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O thus be it ever when free-men shall stand

Between their lov'd home and the war's desolation;

Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land

Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserv'd us a nation!

Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,

And this be our motto: “In God is our trust!”

And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

On Sept. 13, 1814, Francis Scott Key visited the British fleet in Chesapeake Bay to secure the release of Dr. William Beanes, who had been captured after the burning of Washington, DC. The release was secured, but Key was detained on ship overnight during the shelling of Fort McHenry, one of the forts defending Baltimore from the bloody British and their attack. In the morning, he was so delighted to see the American flag still flying over the fort that he began a poem to commemorate the occasion. First published under the title “Defense of Fort M'Henry,” the poem soon attained wide popularity as sung to the tune “To Anacreon in Heaven.” The origin of this tune is obscure, but it may have been written by John Stafford Smith, a British composer born in 1750. “The Star-Spangled Banner” was officially made the national anthem by Congress in 1931, although it already had been adopted as such by the army and the navy.

There are several singable English versions of the Internationale, jooma, but that literal translation from the Russian doesn't really work in practice in English. There are plenty of people in the UK who still sing the Internationale.

The Soviet anthem sounds very stirring Odie, you should find it and see.

I'm disconcerted to find the marching song of the SA there though!

Bald flattern Hitlerfahnen über Barrikaden.

Die Knechtschaft dauert nur noch kurze Zeit!

You are absolutely correct. The reason I provided the russian lyrics was because the song was used as the soviet anthem, with those lyrics.

Please note that I am not supporting the nazis by including their anthem in the poll options. I simply like it as a song.

They knew the Canadian anthem would win hands down so he left it out to give the USA a chance.

I didn't even know that there was a European anthem.

How does it go? and Who sings it?

It's a portion taken from the Ninth Symphony composed in 1823 by Ludwig Van Beethoven. It has no official lyrics. If you want to know the unofficial ones, just search "european anthem" in wikipedia.

I like it! Our anthem is supposedly set to an old drinking tune, but this one's much better. You can dance to it, drink to it, it stirs pride in the soul.

It gets my vote so far. :guitarist

I really like the Moldavian National Anthem------I don't know the words but can hum the tune. It goes like this Hmmm hmm da da, hm hm da hm da da da de dum de da, da de dum dum dum da de dum, hmm hmm hm da de. It then repeats for the sencond stanza and makes a minor change at the end to de da instead of da de. It's quite a lovely tune when played on a harmonica.
