Prostate Treatment/Lupron Shots- need advice

Post by RedGlitter »

About two years ago my dad had prostate cancer. He was treated with radioactive seeds and a series of Lupron (hormone) shots. For about a year now he has complained of pain in his hip and leg. He's terrified (as am I) that it could be bone cancer. They ran a bone scan on him today but we don't yet know the results. His PSA has gone up but according to the doctor "not enough to worry about." We're hoping this pain is a pinched nerve or arthritis. I've been looking up Lupron side effects and I see that men who have taken the injections complain of joint aches and pain in the hip and the leg. This is slightly reassuring to me but I'd like to ask if anyone here has any experience with this problem or if anyone has anything they can tell me?? Thank you.

My former boss had the radioactive seed treatment about eight years ago.

Before the treatment, he was very pale, and getting very shaky and feeble. He was well into his seventies then, but it was a pretty rapid transformation.

After the treatment (which was a great success), he regained his colour, and his former confidence and faculties.

He did have to sell his standard transmission Volvo, as he couldn't operate the clutch after the treatment, but he blamed that on smashing both legs in an accident in the 1940s. I guess the treatment may of exacerbated the old injuries?

The good news is that he's well over 80 now, and although he's slowed down quite a bit, he's healthy, and enjoys a full life.

All the best for your dad. I hope his treatment works just as well as it did for my old boss.

Joint pain/aches is a known side affect from Lupron - as you know

My father in law went thru this - his knees ache, and he can't put too much pressure on them, and he has old knee injuries as Richard Bell's story.

Hopefull your fathers pain is just a side affect.

My father in law is now 89 yrs old.

I hope you're right Patsy and that it's just a side effect. We've been through enough tribulation for a lifetime. Is there anything that can be done for this pain? Any over the counter stuff? I have my dad taking ibuprofen but it only mildly works, when it works.

Red

sorry it took somtime to get back to you - my computer just shut done??

Has your Dad tried a hot bath - or a heating pad on his low back & hip area?

Has or would he go for a back massage?

I know my father in law had shot into his knees

Theres this pain spray I buy at CVS - they keep it behind the pharmacy counter - so you'll need to ask for it "ARTIC SPRAY" I use it for my back pain and anywhere else I hurt. Its @ $20.00 a bottle - it works.

Hi Patsy,

He hasn't tried any of those things actually but the heating pad seems like a good idea. And I can pick up some Arctic Spray. I used to use that. That stuff is cold! :wah:
