IMO instincts like paranoia have important value, since they represent millions of years of information boiled down to a single feeling or hunch. Natural selection probably weeded out the most optimistic and trusting of the species... they were clearly eaten or killed. :)

On a purely free market, despite how much a person manages to save up, a retiree would quickly be stripped of all wealth after they lose their private health insurance and have to pay for the first medical emergency out of pocket.
